Posture While Canoe Paddling

How did we do? My husband was a professional river guide for 10 years (rafting) and his lumbar disc issues began then in his early 20s, secondary to twisted lifting fully loaded food coolers in and out of rafts. Somehow I think the dog has the most upright and elegant stance of all of us!

Hi Laurel,

A good sitting postion for canoeing can be challenging for people in the undustrialised world as we are not raised with squatting, hingeing forward at the groins, or opening our knees wide in sitting. This makes any activity sitting with the knees higher than the pelvis unfamiliar and difficult, including the canoeing position, and it will tend to tuck the pelvis.

I reckon you are both doing pretty well; it looks like your spines are well supported, and your husband certainly has lovely open posture across his chest and shoulders. The Gokhale Method could help in fine tuning your posture – and what you learn vis a vis everyday posture always extrapolates extremely well to sport and leisure activities.

Thanks for sending in such a beautiful image, and yes, your dog has a great stance! I especially like the way s/he is positioned just between the two of you  :-)
