I've been happy with the design of convertible car seats (they face backward for infants and face forward for toddlers) like those made by Britax. They are typically designed with an erect back, which reduces slumping.

Thanks for the feedback! In the photographs it's difficult to tell if the seat back is truly straight - I will be on the lookout for this brand when I'm in the neighborhood of a store that stocks them - it looks like it is widely available.
