Corns between toes
Esther, I really appreciate your breaking out the forum into more specific topics such as this one.

I am wondering if "toe spread" is anything I should be concerned about.  I have a corn where my 5th toe rubs against the 4th one (not bilaterally). Of course when I contract to form arches the toes just come closer together.  Do you have any suggestions or recommendations about this?

This is hard for me to gauge without seeing your feet. Have you seen a podiatrist? You want to  a) get the corn treated and b) resolve the cause of the problem, which is undue pressure on the area with the corn. Is there too much pressure falling on the front of your feet because of the way you stand and/or walk? If this is the case then just reforming your arches isn't going to fix the problem. You want to get to the root of this problem in addition to taking care of the symptom.

I did see a podiatrist, and after debriding the hard tissue, he basically said I can use corn pads for the rest of my life or until I want to have the toe surgically shortened.  (I already have orthotics but I wear sandals all the time.)

I am definitely trying to make it a habit to stand in my heels and not in my forefoot.  It just takes practice.

I have been reading about a product called Yoga Toes that spreads overlapping toes out.  There are a lot of testimonials at their site (yogapro.com) and you can see pictures. Do you think this would be helpful?

Hi, I just wanted to give you an update.

I had purchased some Beech sandals which have helped me to separate my toes. I don't wear them all the time, however, because I discovered that when I wear thong sandals, I tend to spread the space between the big and second toes too much. When I form a slight arch in my foot, the toes all line up very nicely, and my little toe (where the corn forms) is not irritated.  At the same time, I focus on bearing weight in the heel.

I think this is going to "turn the tide"!

I have been experimenting with Vibram Five Finger shoes and they do a nice job of separating the toes. You may want to give them a try. I don't endorse the running barefoot craze (without careful preparation and attention to various factors), but I think for walking around, these are useful.
