Neck equivalent of the inner corset
Hi,

I was just wondering if there was a way to strengthen the muscles in your neck responsible for lengthening it like you do with the inner corset?

Thanks ahead of time!

Retracting the head back and up in little pulses is a good exercise. On page 207 of 8 Steps I show how to use resistance to strengthen these muscles. You can also push backwards against your hands while sitting or standing. I also like carrying a light weight on top of my head - something like an ankle weight - to push up against and guide me on which way is up. The muscle you are strengthening is longus colli.

Esther,

I was wondering what you think of the chin tuck and head lift exercise you do on your back to strengthen the deep neck flexors. Its very intense! It seems as if the exercise in the book where you press the back of your head is strengthening the extensors rather than the flexors, which apparently are underactive during neck pain.

Best,

Simon

I'm not 100% sure I understand you here, but these sound like the same exercise in a different orientation. Both strenthen longus colli.
