Weight training
I threw my lower back a little over a year ago and have since stopped lifting weights.  I have been stretch sitting for a few weeks now and am working on stretch-lying while I sleep (with noticeable improvement  :)). I would like to start lifting again though, and I am wondering if this is a good idea at this point in my postural re-alignment.

For example, I know that with shoulder rolls, tight pectorals can be problematic, and doing chest exercises could be counterproductive.  When do you think it would be a good idea to start lifting weights regularly again?  Thanks for the help!

This depends on what exactly you are planning to do, but I would say in general that you want to integrate the inner corset and hiphinging principles before you begin any significant weight training. You also want to understand neck lengthening, shoulder rolls and spine alignment, tallstanding, stacksitting - did I leave anything out?!! The material in 8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back is pretty basic - skim it all and focus on inner corset if you're eager to begin weight-training. Also, work with a trainer / physical therapist at the outset to be sure you don't re-injure yourself.

Enjoy!

Dear Esther,

I would like your opinion on comments provided about the following book: http://www.amazon.com/Starting-Strength-2nd-Mark-Rippetoe/product-reviews/0976805421/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1

I believe this is the best weight training book I have ever read about the technique used for squats and the bench press.
And the accompanying video:

An interesting website that has some useful exercises for stretching the psoas muscle. I t interesting to note that the gentleman is 59 years old and lady also in her 50s.

The Amazon reviews on most of these speak for themselves. In the trailer of the video product, quite a few of the models sway their backs and one rounds his back - but only slightly. I plan to get these books and check them out. The last reference seems a little weak - if I read it correctly, you have to pay a couple of dollars to access their directions to a couple of stretches - hmmm, I think I'll give that one a skip unless you think they are really special. For the psoas, I am enchanted with using glidewalking (leaving your rear heel down on the ground for a long time) to get this muscle stretched.
