Hi Esther and everyone
When I received the last Positive stance mail about Samba,
I thought of another kind of dance that seems to me a very healthy and great way to strengthen the body, this time the upper part - the upper back and shoulder
and that's the ethiopian shoulder dance :

I love dancing and clicked on the link, but it took me to a Tina Turner video...love Tina, but no shoulder dancing : )
So I did a search on youtube and found this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7tyZuTcuGA
Need to find a slower version for me!
Thanks for the suggestion

Great suggestion! I'm intimidated by the speed, but would love to learn the dance.
Any ideas for how one could go about breaking down the movements? I'm not sure, but it seems like the movement begins in and is powered by the shoulder blades/rhomboids.
Also, when the women in the grey dresses did the side to side and neck shearing motions, with their torsos absolutely still, I couldn't help but think "inner corset!"

Ooh, I love this too. Yes, I'm thinking a serious amount of inner corset with all of this movement. I think the strength of the torso can act as an anchor for the freedom of the shoulders and head movement.
I think in some ways it might be difficult to slow down the shoulder movement, since it seems to be a "toss" movement. The shoulders are thrown upward or sideways by (rhomboides, shoulder cuff and probably other muscles) and then released to fall with gravity or using the momentum of the inital toss. My suggestion would be to toss the shoulders upward and then relax and let them fall. This can happen in an isolated slower way. Eventually you could just speedup the "tosses." I hope this is making sense....
