Getting UP from a chair

Hi Esther I didn't know where to put this question. Is there a proper way to get up from a chair? Does it matter how one gets up from a chair? I don't know who this guy is but I found this video online if you can take a look at it sometime:

And I was just wondering if it is a good idea to get up this way or not. I did read your book but can't remember if you talked about getting up from a chair sorry if you already did. Thanks

Getting out of a chair can either be simple - or quite triacky if you have a tight psoas muscle. I see the video clip's technique as being quite contrived and not addresssing the tight psoas case. It puts a lot of strain on the knees.

  • If you don't have a tight psoas muscle, I think it's best to do it the way the video author says not to do it. Simply hinge forward at the hip a bit (moving your torso as a unit takes some practice), raise your hips, off the chair and then straighten out your knees. This will spare your knees quite a lot of strain. 
  • If you do have a tight psoas, you need to protect against your back swaying by doing a strong rib anchor (see our Gokhale Moment videos under the video tab on the main menu). Also, straighten out slowly, allowing your psoas to stretch, instead of letting it pull your lumbar spine into a sway.
