Gokhale SpineTracker™
SpineTracker consists of a wearable component—five small sensors that are placed vertically from the sacrum up the lumbar spine—and a mobile app, which communicates with the sensors to show the shape of your spine in real time, as you move.
This wearable enhances understanding of the concepts and techniques presented in the Gokhale Method. SpineTracker allows the student greater autonomy in judging their posture against their personal ideals, and measuring their progress in class.
Where Can I Find SpineTracker™?
Anyone can use SpineTracker under the guidance of a qualified Gokhale Method teacher. This wearable is unique in that it is not a standalone posture solution, but goes hand in hand with the education and training you receive with the Gokhale Method. Proper usage of SpineTracker requires a Gokhale Method teacher to help the student find and set posture ideals, to interpret the visuals in the app, and make healthy adjustments.
Corporate Events

SpineTracker is available for corporate events. For large group presentations, the wearable may be demonstrated by an assistant or volunteer. In a corporate Course, all students will have the opportunity to use SpineTracker themselves.
Our Teachers

Many of our teachers currently have SpineTracker available for interested students. The wearable may be demonstrated in Free Workshops, or used on students in an Initial Consultation, a private Foundations Course, or a Continuing Education class. (The wearable is not yet available for student use in group Foundations Courses, but may be used for illustrating concepts).

“Comparing Muscle Activity and Spine Shape in Various Sitting Styles” analyzes muscle activity (SEMG) and the shape of the spine (Gokhale SpineTracker) in parallel during three sitting styles: slouched (forward-bent), arched upright, and stacksitting upright. The paper reports that while the mid-back SEMG activity slightly (significantly) increases during stacksitting (sitting arched) in comparison to sitting slouched, the spine shape measured by the SpineTracker “showed significant straightening of the lower spine during stacksitting as compoared to the slouched and arched positions”. In a recent research paper “Analyzing Spinal Shape Changes During Posture Training Using a Wearable Device” the change in posture before and after postural training based on spinal curvature recorded using the Gokhale SpineTracker is systematically analyzed and automatically grouped based on common characteristics. The research concluded that these groups “could be identified with specific changes in posture by a professional posture trainer”. Read more.
Another research paper, “Posture Classification Based on a Spine Shape Monitoring System”, uses and compares current state of the art machine learning techniques to identify if a user is sitting, standing, or hinging based on the Gokhale SpineTracker posture data. The paper reveals that while this classification performs better on per-user datasets than on a global dataset of all users, the global dataset is suited for a reasonably reliable prediction of a user's position. The research paper titled “Evaluating an Accelerometer-Based System for Spine Shape Monitoring” analyzes the accuracy of the Gokhale SpineTracker sensors and the accuracy of the spine curve we show to students. The main finding is: “We conclude, that SpineTracker is capable of capturing the spinal curvature for static poses accurately and provides valuable feedback to the user.” Read more.
