Meet Roberta

Roberta trained as a physician at New York University School of Medicine and has spent much of her medical career educating the public on health and medicine by designing interactive museum exhibits on subjects ranging from the micro-world of cells to human development, aging, women’s health and the brain.

Roberta came to the Gokhale Method through her love of dancing Argentine Tango and her desire to find answers for the musculoskeletal pain sufferers in her own family. Introduced to 8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back by her tango instructor, Roberta was immediately struck by the sound anatomical principles behind the method, and the empowerment of teaching students to heal their own bodies through mastering the proper way to sit, stand, bend over and walk – so that life itself becomes a meditative road to health.

Teaching the Gokhale Method combines so many of her interests and beliefs about mind-body connections, learning from our past, and the structural wisdom and beauty found in our muscles and bones. She finds great joy in helping people move their way to a more active, open and pain-free life.

  • For the first time in my life I know what it is to “stand up straight”, and am comfortable standing and sitting. Pain in my back and neck have lessened considerably. The tension in my neck and shoulders has diminished significantly and continues to improve. I can now tell when I am tensing my shoulders and immediately correct it. I can sit and work at my computer for hours without neck pain, shoulder pain or headaches. My migraines have decreased significantly. People are constantly commenting on my “amazing posture”. When I looked at pictures of me at our daughter’s wedding, my head was forward, shoulders rounded and slouched…I looked awful. This past week I was at my sister’s and she sent pictures of my visit…looking at myself was like looking at a different (and younger) person. WOW!!
  • When I injured my back last fall, one of my greatest fears was that I would have to give up a favorite activity, gardening. I wasn't worried that I would have to give it up because of the injury; this, I was certain, would heal. I was afraid that I would have to give it up to prevent re-injury. My gardening includes seed-starting and planting flowers and vegetables, digging up and moving small bushes, weeding and more. I can easily be outside for several hours a day. I am constantly bending, lifting, and digging. One of the reasons that I took the Gokhale course was to learn how to do these things without hurting myself. I am happy to say that I am back to my normal rigorous routine in our back yard. Utilizing the technique of hip-hinging and engaging my inner corset, I feel that I am not only preventing injury but also strengthening muscles in my abdomen, along my spine and thighs. The Gokhale method has allowed me to resume gardening, and has actually enhanced my gardening experience.
