Advanced Glidewalking

About this workshop

Bipedal gait is one of the defining characteristics of what it is to be human. For millennia we have hunted, gathered, cavorted, and crossed continents on two legs. And yet, in the last century or so, we’ve managed to walk our way into a tangle of pain and dysfunction that does not do our species proud.

The introductory courses of the Gokhale Method (Foundations, Pop-up, and Elements) train students in improved gait but cannot do justice to all the intricacies and multitude of moving parts involved in transporting our bodies from one place to another.

In this Advanced Glidewalking course we revisit the basics of healthy, natural walking, encouraging the glutes to play their part, the posterior chain of muscles in the feet and legs to power us forward, and the swing phase of every step to deeply relax and reset our system. In this course, we rely heavily on musical metaphors and selected tracks of music to cue our muscles (“sonification”), and cue our natural rhythm. We also glean wisdom from biomechanically-astute fellow humans, past and present, in how to do the quintessential human thing of walking. We will deep dive into the complex cascade of events that constitutes human locomotion, considering the major muscles' contributions to the whole, each phase of a stride, and the cadence of our movements.

Gokhale Method Testimonials

  • Each time I consult with Doreen regarding neck pain/ upper back pain I learn something new. As I work to develop new habits about posture, Doreen excels at concrete help as well as encouragement. Thank you Doreen!

  • It has been a wonderful experience working individually and with one or two other people at a time. My posture has improved and I have had no sciatica pain since I started with the Gohkale method. I’m very thankful. A special shoutout to my instructor, Doreen.

  • I want to share my experience with others who might be weighing the pros and cons of private online vs. group or private in-person classes. I knew I wanted a hands-on experience but was hesitant to make the commitment— an intensive weekend class with Doreen Giles would require a three-hour drive from my home plus a two-night hotel stay. COVID concerns made us both shy away from a group class.

My private in-person session with Doreen was a transformative experience. Not only did I receive expert guidance in the Gokhale Elements tailored to my understanding and needs, but I was able to ask

  • The Gokhale Method teaches good skeletal postural alignment in a very practical, immediately applicable way.  In my explorations of various bodywork methods, I was frustrated by not knowing how to apply them successfully to my movements.  The Gokhale Method teaches exactly what to do.  It's great!

I have had lower back pain for two years. In the Foundations Course, I experienced gentle and direct techniques that relieve the pain. It's been easy to practice and apply what I've learned, and I am having pain-free days.

Doreen provides lots of compassionate individual attention and insight to the

  • Because of some life-saving abdominal surgery when I was 17, I have had a persistent pain behind my right shoulder blade whenever I stand for longer than 10-15 minutes at a time, like when I'm cooking, for example. With the Gokhale Method, I learned how to use my "Inner Corset" to strengthen those abdominal muscles and hold myself upright. I lost the pain I've had for 53 years. The Gokhale Method truly is a way to become pain-free!

  • While the Gokhale book is a great way to learn about the method and the research behind it, I found the Foundations Course to be the perfect next step for taking my education to a higher level. Not only did my teacher Doreen review the lessons with me and walk through them in great detail, she also added many other tips and tricks to help improve my form and my understanding of the concepts. Having a knowledgeable teacher who believes in the method and cares about your well-being is the key to finding your way. I highly recommend this course to anyone that is serious about improving their

I am so thankful for this course!  It has truly been life-changing.  I used to think good posture was strenuous and difficult to maintain, but now I can comfortably sit with good posture for as long as I want to!  Additionally, there is a noticeable improvement in my sense of well-being.  The benefits involve the entire body, not just the back, and it is mentally very uplifting.  My posture and gait were affected after a foot surgery. Even after a lot of physical therapy, my body still wasn’t functioning as “one unit.”  Now I have learned the importance of a proper, natural gait, which

  • Not only was my persistent nine-month-long pain from a pinched nerve relieved after my two-month practice of the Gokhale Foundations Course with Doreen, but my chiropractor noticed that my degenerated disc in the lumbar region showed increased height on comparative x-rays!  So great to see the effect and feel better.  And I love Stretchlying!
