Everyday Posture in Mumbai

In May I spent two weeks in Mumbai, on the west coast of India. To a newcomer it can be overwhelming, being a megacity of over 12 million people; I hold a deeply personal connection and affection for this place where I grew up. I was in Mumbai on holiday, but I didn’t break my habit of over three decades of taking some candid photos and videos of what I observed around me. Nothing newsworthy or touristic—just snatches of daily life here and there. Whereas seeing healthy posture has become rare in the US, it is still an everyday encounter in India, and that has inspired me to record it and share.

Posture Makeover

In this season of shorts and bikinis it is easy for us to pick ourselves apart. Wanting to take care of our bodies is a natural, healthy impulse, but when it gets focused on body image it can become an unhealthy obsession. You can help transform negative thoughts about the shape of your body, or the wrinkles on your face, into positive ones by focusing on posture.

Pregnancy and Lower Back Pain

I'm reaching out to pregnant women today, because I've been reflecting on a clinical study that captures the scope of the problem of lower back (lumbar) pain in expectant mothers and because I have all too vivid memories of how lower back and sciatic pain affected me when I was nine-months pregnant with my first child. This crippling pain continued for a year, at which point I had back surgery that provided only temporary relief. This painful chapter in my life is what started me on my path to understanding the causes and treatments for back pain.
