History

Esther Gokhale founded her Wellness Center in 1992
to make the Gokhale Method available to people who
have experienced pain in their backs, necks, and knees.
Gokhale developed this unique methodology over the
course of several years of education, research, and field studies around the world.

Gokhale has been involved in integrative health therapies all her life. Growing up in India, she studied Indian dance and yoga. On family holidays, she traveled to remote villages and tribal areas where she found the flexibilities and capabilities of indigenous people fascinating. This became an interest that would later influence her work and theories. As a young woman, Gokhale suffered unrelenting back pain and had back surgery that did not provide permanent relief. Rather than risk further surgery she decided to begin her own deep research into the causes and treatments for back pain.

After obtaining a biochemistry degree from Princeton and a Chinese medicine degree from the San Francisco College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, she moved to Paris to study Aplomb®, a French movement re-education technique, and earned her certification in that system. She then traveled to Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America to study posture and movement in populations with low incidences of back pain. Gokhale has studied at Stanford University, taking courses in anthropology, anatomy and physiology. Using her formal education, specialized training and extensive field research, she developed her systematic approach to pain-free living.

Gokhale lectures internationally for medical schools, medical foundations, professional sports teams and corporations. She is the author of the Nautilus Gold Award-winning book, 8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back. She is currently at work on her second book which addresses parenting for good posture. She has not had back pain in over 20 years.
