Hello everyone,
until about 8 months ago, I went everywhere in shoes because I had flat feet. I was told that they needed constant support, especially as I had weak ankles. Then I read about barefoot running, and I started going barefoot all the time. In just a couple of months my feet strengthened, and 'grew' arches.
So, I now have arches, but they're very flat looking. They look like my brothers arches, and he wears shoes 24/7.
How do I strengthen my arches, and make them more rounded, and defined?
Thanks,
Hunter Gatherer.

Hi there,
The fact that you are developing arches and you are not experiencing foot pain is wonderful! If you want to continue to strengthen your arches, you might consider doing a few additional exercises. Esther has some nice ones on pages 211-212 in 8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back. I would recommend getting flexible arch supports for your shoes, however if you are already walking around barefoot without too many troubles, then they may not be necessary.
Using your feet while you walk can be really helpful. Walking on sand is a great way to feel the "flicking" action you want to incorporate into your walk as the foot releases off of the floor. Plus, walking on sand is just a great foot workout in general. Grabbing and "shortening" your foot right before push off will contract your foot muscles and strenghten your arches. Then the foot is perfectly poised to push off of the ground.
Good luck to you!
Warmly,

Thanks for replying!
What do you mean by a 'flicking action'?
I'll have a look at those exercises, thanks.

It's great to hear that you've been able to strengthen your feet and develop arches through barefoot activities.
Here are a few suggestions to help strengthen your arches:
Toe exercises: Perform toe exercises to help strengthen the muscles in your feet. This can include exercises like toe curls, toe spreads, and picking up objects with your toes. These exercises target the intrinsic muscles of the feet, which play a role in maintaining the arches.
Arch strengthening exercises: There are specific exercises that can target the muscles that support the arches. These may include exercises like arch lifts, arch rolls, and arch domes. These exercises help activate and strengthen the muscles responsible for maintaining the arches. lol shot io
