TIght psoas muscle

The psoas muscle on my right side is very tight and painful and pulling my sacroiliac joint out of whack. I've been going to the Sports Medicine Institute for massage work on the muscle, but wondered if there's anything in your viewpoint that would help relax this muscle?

Hi Dee,

We've found that lengthening this muscle can take time, but ultimately is possible.  When walking I would encourage you to try and anchor your rib cage.  The rib anchor is something we teach to keep the ribs from jutting out by using the internal obliques to keep them smooth with the front of the torso.  Check out 8 Steps to a Pain-Free back for more information and pictures on the rib anchor.  This will help mitigate any sway in your back, which a tight psoas can contribute towards.  Once the ribs are firmly anchored, try taking smaller steps for now and focusing on keeping your back heel on the ground a little longer than you might already do.  The combination of back heel down and ribs anchored will slowly lengthen your psoas.  It's best to proceed cautiously as your psoas may not want to relax and lengthen a whole lot at first.

Additionally, I would suggest sleeping on your back with a pillow (or more!) under your knees, so your psoas has a chance to rest throughout the night.

I hope you find this helpful.

Warmly,

Charlene Hannibal
