Shin splints

What would cause shin splints in only my left leg?  The back pain and sciatica are on my right side, but I've tried to be careful not to favor my right leg when glidewalking.

Hi Bess,

Without watching you walk, my first instinct would be that you could be landing a little too heavily.  Using the motto: "Walk with your muscles, spare your joints," try and listen to your walk and make as little sound as possible.  Having a calmer interface with the ground could eliminate any jarring that can occur when the glute muscles don't engage all the way through footfall.  Also using your feet actively can help propel your leg forward so the front of the leg (tibialis anterior, quadriceps, hip flexors) are not wholly responsible for bringing each leg forward before your step.

Please let me know if either of these things help or if you need further explanation.

Best,

Charlene Hannibal
