Foam Roller

Following the recent Austin workshop, I'm staying quite active in practicing and incorporating the method into my daily life.  I have a foam roller and find it quite comfortable to use up and down my spine, especially the prominent protrubing curvature in what I think is the sacral/lumbar area.  I've used it a couple of times as at the end of my "Gokhale Workout" during which I practice the steps.  Is this okay?  It feels pleasant, but I don't want to unwittingly do harm.  Are you pro, con, or neutral on foam rollers?  Don

Hi Don,

Esther highly recommends lengthening the spine on a roller. If you have a protruding spine, a regular foam roller may be the right answer for you. You are unlikely to do harm as long as you hold your head so as not to strain your neck, and use your inner corset so as not to over-curve your spine, either foward or back.

Traditional foam rollers often don't provide enough support to be "satisfying." Esther wanted something that really came up to meet the back and didn't collapse, so the Gokhale Method now offers its own foam roller, with a hard plastic center and a soft foam around the outside, which you can find here, along with detailed instructions about how to use a roller properly:
