it seems (even though i am just starting the "breath in the chest" idea) to conflict with standrd singing breathing (diaphram) ... as if I will have to adapt some sort of blend of the two to stand well and sing well. any singers out there have any tips?

When you are singing you need the control of the diaphragm - not just chest breathing. You'llk find that the inner corset will power your singing though. I've ahd singers in my courses call it "the issign piece" in projection.
